Directed by Ted V. Mikels (The Corpse Grinders), the wonderfully titled Blood Orgy of the She-Devils is a 1973 occult thriller that, on the surface at least, is comparable to many other black magic themed movies of the era by having a provocative title, scantily clad women dancing at a black mass, murder, sacrifice, etc. But where Blood Orgy of the She-Devils differs from other titillating titles like Virgin Witch, Season of the Witch, The Toy Box or even Hammer’s classic The Devil Rides Out is that, despite luring you in with the promise of sleazy people doing filthy things to each other in the name of Satan, very little actually happens and, even worse if you’re going into it looking for sexy thrills, even less is actually seen.

Which is a major disappointment when you consider the delights that the title insinuates – imagine if there were no chainsaw or massacre in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (much like we got with TCM: The Next Generation) – but when you consider that Mikels’ movies were generally PG-rated versions of what adults were seeing in the fleapit cinemas of the 1970s then we shouldn’t be surprised. Yes, it looks grimy, the acting is questionable and the production is generally low-rent so on that stylistic level it fits right in with the previously mentioned – and much more graphic and exciting – films but when you go to watch these movies there are certain other X-rated thrills that generally come with the territory and their non-appearance here just makes it a film where near-naked (i.e. they have their underwear on) women dance about to some voodoo drums – which is probably the best scene in the film – and then a high priestess tries to right the wrongs of witch trials from centuries before. It’s all very dull and too talky to engage on any level, the ‘bloodbath’ that is promised in the DVD blurb is little more than people falling over screaming and everybody keeps their clothes on which, if you’re any sort of grindhouse fan, is not what you want from a film with a title like this.
