Director: David Ayer

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Olivia Williams, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Joe Manganiello, Mireille Enos

Sabotage sees Arnold Schwarzenegger break away from the fun nostagic trip of The Expendables movies and into a different kind of ensemble gathering where he plays John ‘Breacher’ Wharton, the leader of a team of DEA task force agents whose raid on a drugs cartel’s safe house results in Breacher’s team skimming a few million dollars from their target’s horde of cash. DVD Review: Devil’s Due (2014)

Devil's Due DVD CoverDistributor: 20th Century Fox

BBFC Classification: 15

Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett

Starring: Allison Miller, Zach Gilford, Sam Anderson, Vanessa Ray, Geraldine Singer

Satanic cults, pregnant newlyweds and found footage are the three main ingredients of Devil’s Due, and if those things are enough to get you excited then you may need to question where your life is going. The whole found footage thing has become very old very quickly and, like most stylistic trends, has nothing new or exciting to offer unless a writer or director is willing to take a chance and actually do something other than the obvious and generic. In 2014 we already had Delivery, a film that tried to tap into the Rosemary’s Baby-style paranoia Continue reading

Blu-ray Review: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

The Return of the Living Dead BR CoverDistributor: Second Sight Films

BBFC Classification: 15

Director: Dan O’Bannon

Starring: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Thom Mathews, Miguel A. Núñez Jr., Brian Peck, Linnea Quigley, Beverly Randolph

Zombies – everybody love zombies these days, don’t they? Of course they do, that’s why there are so many damn zombie movies out there. The trouble is that 90% of them are complete tripe and not worth investing too much time in as you’ll only be disappointed by the CGI filling up most of the screen. It seems that you have to go back if you want to watch some quality brain-munching and Second Sight Films are happy to oblige in bringing a zombie classic back from the grave.

Starting out as a sequel to 1968’s groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead, The Return of the Living Dead went through several Continue reading

DVD Review: The Black Castle (1952)

The Black Castle DVD CoverDistributor: Odeon Entertainment

BBFC Classification: PG

Director: Nathan Juran

Starring: Richard Greene, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Stephen McNally, Paula Corday

The Black Castle is a film that originally came out at the wrong time; too late to fit in with Universal Studio’s initial run of horror classics and too early for their brief revival with The Creature From the Black Lagoon and the return of the gothic horror tradition updated by Hammer, it feels a little meandering in terms of vibe but is never less than entertaining. This is down to two things – a simple script and some wonderful performances from the lead performers, not least horror icon Boris Karloff (Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein) whose image looms large on Continue reading

DVD Review: Robocop (2014)

Robocop DVD CoverDistributor: StudioCanal

BBFC Classification: 12

Director: José Padilha

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson

Uh-oh! It’s that dreaded ‘R’ word again; no, not RoboCop but… ahem… remake/reboot/reimagining or whatever ‘re’ prefix it is this week. Although in this case it isn’t that much of a surprise as RoboCop is a franchise that hasn’t been particularly well served since Paul Verhoeven’s original movie became an instant classic back in 1987, despite the massive potential that it had, so of course a remake has been on the cards for a while. However, remaking RoboCop was always going to be Continue reading
